It's a sort of "end of the world as we know it" thing. As it turns out, they were about 600 years too optimistic. Their world certainly came to an earlier end. I don't think I agree that the Mayan calandar hasn't been wrong since, although I certainly agree that it is remarkably precise in terms of keeping time. Human kind will survive long after 2012. All things considered, I suspect it would take some very serious events and a period of many decades to eradicate humanity completely, after all. We've pread across the globe into nearly every environment, and we adapt fairly quickly to change. My sincere hope is that 2012 will mark the end of Earth being the center of human history as human kind takes the first leaps to colonize other worlds.
