Where did the 2012 prophecy come from?

Who thought this thing up? Who did the math to say 2012 is the end day? Where did it come from?

How is it gaining such momentum?

2012 is when the Mayan Calendar supposedly stops. New Agers have grabbed onto this idea that since the Mayan calendar was so precise for so many centuries, that the reason it stopped is that the world as we know it is coming to an end. Great changes, upheavals, etc.

It’s gaining ground because of groupthink and ignorance.

Think of it this way: your calendar stops every year on December 31. How many times has the world ended when your calendar stopped?

Its not the end. Its just the end of the Mayan calender, and several other ancient civilazations.

Its based on the procession of the equinoxes.

it originated because december 21, 2012 is the date that the Mayan calender stops at…. thats about it… we just now assume the world it over, lol.

The answer to this part, is that there is money to be made off movies.
You didn’t hear anything about it until the movie trailers started… and even then, you had to watch the History channel, or look for it specifically.

It’s gaining momentum because the date is getting nearer.

The most common source is from the Mayans, but there is also a Jewish one, Nostradamus had one – there are at least 4 or 5 cultures that have an end date in 2012. It is easy to research since, as you say, "it is gaining momentum."

Its a cross refference to the maya calendar predicting "the end of times as we know it" which miraculously seems to fit with the bible (apocalypse) and some Nostradamus prophecies.

a dead civilization, so of course they must know so much about the end of the world, since they didn’t even see their own destruction coming, its silly

From people who think that the end of an Mesoamerican Calendar means the Apocalypse is nigh! Therefore in order to prepare for their inevitable end they must sell merchandise such as T-Shirts and survival books ect. -_-

Myan calender. BUT the BIBLE says "NO MAN KNOWS THE DAY THAT I WILL RETURN!!!!!"

They are wrong!!! Jesus said so-he picks the moment. And the Anti-Christ has already been put into motion I think, although he has not shown himself on mass scale yet.

2012 is gaining momentum because its SOOO soon. But its not gonna happen. People are hollow and Godless and will claim to anyhting. THe myans just stopped becuase im sure that they were bored going about 300+ years into the future, im sure they thought we can finish this later-DUH.

the answer is, nobody THOUGHT. end of story. this arises from the fact that the mayan calendar ends on dec 21 2012. some guy assumed this meant the world was ending, and he wrote a book on it. unfortunately he did NOT consult the mayan descendants who actually KNOW what it means. it signifies the end and beginning of a sun cycle, nothing sinister.

"Who did the math to say 2012 is the end day? "
nobody. people have done the math to DISPROVE it, but the math to say its happening was never done…thus why it ISNT happening.

"How is it gaining such momentum?"
same reason as Y2K. people get scared easily with matters like this and don’t do their own research. they then tell someone else and then that person gets scared to. add to that stupid shit like the history channel perpetuating rumors to get viewers, and it spins out of control just as Y2K did. i promise you if you do your research on this subject, you will never be afraid of it again. fear of a future event is irrational, especially when all evidence points to it NOT happening. everyone will wake up on dec 22 2012 and realise they still have to do their christmas shopping, and this mass panic to do shopping may result in a complete global economic meltdown, a nuclear war, and then a nuclear winter resulting in the end of the world….OMG!!2!12@1!! T3H PROPHECY IS CORRECT!!!!!!12112!@!12!!@11! (see how easy it is to make up doomsday prophecies based on sensational ideas poorly researched?)

"December 21st 2012 is nothing made up. It’s an date alright. But the Mayan Calendar’s last one. They did not predict the end of the world, but possibly the end of life as we know it. Jesus said "Only the Father will know when the end is" We now can conclude that the world will not end. So it gained momentum possibly because it is Scientific fact rather than Y2K which was "created" by humans and 6/6/06. Be aware that it’s not math or "made up" It is a date. But the question is, what will happen?"

the mayans know what will happen since they are the root of this. and they will tell you that based on the position of earth relative to the galaxy at this precise time they believe humans will enter an "awareness" what this means is imprecise since it is a vague description. it could mean psychic powers could become prevalent, the world will become far more spiritual, etc.
the simple answer is nobody knows what will happen OTHER than life will continue.

2012 is a prophecy based on astrology, the movement of the stars and their relation to human behavior, during certain planetary and star transitions the human race behaves in certain ways and attains different arrays of consciousness.. 2012 is the year that the photon belt of light (also known as the belt of information) is in perfect conjunctions with our planets including Earth, and it creates the Galactic Crossing which also happens to be aligned with the center of the Milky Way galaxy (the glimpse into Heaven), it does not mean the End, is means the Beginning of Understanding of who and what we are as a Human race experiencing life on this planet. Many of us are already in great awareness of this Universal truth, but 2012 is said to be the half way point, where everyone pretty much will know the truth of our existence.

It’s the Mayan calendar version of the Y2K bug. The Mayan calendar enters another cycle in December 2012. Some people are just stupid enough to believe that a calendar date rollover is the sign of some momentous happening–like the end of the world.

I’ll be laughing when 2013 gets here, that’s for sure.

Take some Sitchin, some Leider, some Arguelles, wrap it up with some new-age woo-woo and stir in some self-serving authors looking to make a quick buck, and you’ve got the 2012 doomsday.
