There is so much talk about all these prophecies regarding the year 2012, specifically with regard to the date of December 21, 2012.

2012 is sometimes claimed to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse). Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the thirteenth B’ak’tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order.

Accordingly, several eclectic authors claim that a major, world-changing event will take place in 2012:

The 1995 book The Mayan Prophecies linked the Maya calendar with long-period sunspot cycles.
The book 2012: Mayan Year of Destiny claims the Maya may have been instructed in their wisdom by disembodied entities from Orion and the Pleiades. Contact was maintained through shamanic rituals conducted in accordance with the movements of planets and stars. However, some Mayan priests living and working in Guatemala assert that there is no legitimacy to this theory.
The 1997 book The Bible Code claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth.
The book The Nostradamus Code speaks of a series of natural disasters caused by a comet (possibly as above) that will allow the third Antichrist to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a possible nuclear war, although in the strictest sense it is unspecific as to nuclear war or some other natural or man caused destruction.
The book The Orion Prophecy claims that the Earth’s magnetic field will reverse.
The 2005 book Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy by Geoff Stray reviews several theories, prophecies and predictions concerning 2012 and finds where authors have used faulty information or have bent the truth to fit their theories.
The 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses theories of a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012, creating a noosphere.
The 2007 book Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation into Civilization’s End by Lawrence Joseph does not make any specific new predictions, but it reviews a number of 2012 predictions made by various sources, and presents arguments for the possible existence of dangerous positive feedback loops involving solar storms, Earth’s magnetic field, cosmic rays, hurricanes, global warming, earthquakes, and supervolcanoes that may be on the verge of erupting.

Other prophecies and apocalyptic writings and hypotheses for this year include:

Terence McKenna’s mathematical novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which humankind will go through a great shift in consciousness.
Some proponents of a peak oil catastrophe place major events in 2012. Richard C. Duncan’s book The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge claims that the Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide. Several studies predict a peak in oil production in or around 2012. [13][14][15]
Some alien-enthusiasts (e.g. Riley Martin), along with some new-agers, believe 2012 to correspond approximately with the return of alien "watchers" or "caretakers" who might have helped the first human civilizations with developing their technology and may have been waiting for us to reach a higher level of technological and/or social advancement. Beliefs range from the extra-terrestrials having benevolent purposes — such as to help human society evolve — to malevolent purposes — such as enslavement of mankind and/or manipulation.

Hear is a link of 44 end of world prophecies that did not happen. One more is not likely to make a difference. What end of the world prophecies do well is sell books and prey on the gullible. There is no science here, just speculation.

Could all these predictions be self fulfilling?

Well let me tell you that you are behind because it is suposed to happen this year. The calander is behind 3 or 4 years so this makes this year 2011 or 2012. Start praying cuz that’s the only thing that will save you now!!! My teacher is a theologist and he told me all of this when i asked him, but people don’t say this so there won’t be a world wide panic!!!

I’ve heard many theories and rumors but where do these ideas come from?? I don’t know much about the bible and its prophecies but I’ve heard non christians and catholics mention things similar to the theories (not specifically 2012) but that around that time is a spiritual turnpoint for us. Any backup or proof or theories that show something massive IS going to happen??

Many great prophets and oracles have predicted the end of days in 2012: Nostradamus, Cybil, Chinese, the Mayans, Merlin, etc.

It sounds a little far fetched that our world as we know it could end in just 4 years…but they have the science to prove it.

The prophets have an amazing track record. I suggest reading some books on Nostradamus. The mayans were amazing astronomers; they predicted lunar eclipses thousands of years into the future…and were right.

Science has proved that every 13,000 years the sun and the stars align, and when this happens the earth will switch poles. (Science has shown that the equator used to be where Alaska is). When this happens there will be a magnetic shift. And well you can only imagine what will happen. Massive earthquakes and destructive tsunamis. This will wipe out life as we know it. Even if this event were to take place over a period of days, there would still be massive destruction.

This science points toward the winter of 2012. December 21, 2012 to be exact. Leading up to this year prophets predicted (as well as the alignment of the stars and sun) that there would be basically a nuclear war. And that much of the population would be wiped out by fire. Nostradamus even said this would be by a muslim. The battle of religion.

There is much more to the prophecies and what not, i suggest watching the history channel and doing some research of your own.

Who knows. This may not happen..but it’s good to be open to opinion and not ignorant to the signs. Enjoy life for what it is; the simple gift of existence.

It’s just that there are so many things pointing to an upcoming time. I figure the 2012 date is just as good as any.

Here are the factors that I am referring to:

According to the Prophesies of St, Malachy (1139 AD) there is only one Pope left, and that prophecy includes a terrible time for the "church".

The Mayan 2012 prophecy as you have brought up.

The changing climate; the polar ice melting at both poles.

The tendency of entire and sometimes ancient nations joining together coincides with what the Bible predicts about the Ten-toed Kingdom from which Antichrist is supposed to come out of the Seluciud portion. (So look for a short-lived ten-toed grouping of nations which include the areas of the ancient Roman empire, and the Seluciud portion of the Grecian Empire).

The state of Israel is already been established. The neighbors of it willing to do anything to get rid of it.

The understanding by few scholars that Russia will turn around from where their attention is and focus on attacking the USA from the north (the ice barrier is being diminished). This is something referred to in scripture in Ezekiel 38 and 39. It is not just Israel that they will attack, but first the USA. They will come through Canada at least partially, seeking to take the center of the land. They will not expect to be defeated, but they will be defeated.

As near as I can tell, the Mayan description of the world in that time would correlate to some passages early on in the Book of Revelation. If this is so, then the Mayans were somehow describing what Revelation has already said. It will not be the end of the world, but it might feel like it.

Do you think that masses of people will get worked up about this thing as 2012 approaches? And could the mass hysteria result in some events that make it into a sort of self fulfilling thing?

People always seemed to get worked up over things when they have been brainwashed by others who have a profound influence over them.

It’s unfortunate that in this world there are people who are easily led and persuaded by colorful characters who seem to have the ability to convince others that they are "the chosen one" who will guide them to a better life and after life.

What is it about humans that makes them gullible and accepting of people and ideas without proof of benefit?

I look at religion and belief and blind faith in god. So many billions of people have followed blindly as religious leaders have promised them salvation and a place in heaven.

All this without proof? If I was to tell you that if you gave me every cent that you own and within 7 days I would turn it in a million dollars you’d ask me for proof that it was going to work, true?

So why don’t people think that way about religion?

I predict that whatever discomfort humans manage to produce for this planet earth, that it will last for about another 600 million years, that’s about it’s age right now. It will then become another Mars and there will be another planet forming in much the same way that planet earth formed.

Don’t worry, nothing cataclysmic is going to happen in your lifetime.

What I mean is, could all these prophecies be self fulfilling, to an extent?

"If we believe crazy things will happen, then could it influence our behavior as groups or individuals to make crazy things happen?

For example, if people believe that times of great upheaval are coming, then there could be more purchases of firearms and other weapons. And more guns and weapons could easily mean increased violence.

* Riley Martin claims that Biaviian aliens will allow passage aboard their ‘Great Mother Ship’ when the Earth is ‘transformed’ in 2012.

The year 2012 is rumored to be the end of the world. I assure you that the world will not end on 2012 December 21 but it will end one day. Remember that if there is a beginning, there is an end.

You have cited Wikipedia and the theories put forward by different individuals. Not included in your list is what the Holy Spirit told us which I have been sharing to the world for a few months now and to you this time. Below is what the Holy Spirit said. He did not say that the world will end sometime in 2012 but told us of some other events beyond 2012. He told us of the coming nuclear World War III that will start at Spratly Islands which I believe will cause a spiritual awakening for the earth’s inhabitants to live in peace for a long time and treat each other as brothers and sisters.

I believe that “all the hype and hysteria over the 2012 prophecies” will make people aware of the messages of the Holy Spirit, especially World War III, and change their behavior in treating their fellowmen and becoming more spiritual.

Here are what I would like to share to the world:

Nostradamus and the book of Revelation
Nostradamus’ prophecy of when the world will end is far into the future, past about AD 3700. This is in agreement with what I heard and learned from the Holy Spirit—that there will only be about 144,000 around AD 2200, peace reigns for a thousand years while the Devil, or Satan, is chained up and locked up in the abyss till around AD 3200 (Revelation 20:1-7), and then Satan will be let loose from his prison to deceive the descendants of the elect for about 500 years (Revelation 20:7-10). After that, the end will come (Revelation 21:1).

Mayan calendar
The Mayan’s Mesoamerican Long Count calendar forms the basis for a New Age belief, first forecast by Jose Arguelles, that a cataclysm will take place on or about 2012 December 21 (Wikipedia). Mainstream Mayan scholars consider “cataclysm” or “apocalypse” as a misinterpretation for to the Mayan scribes, it literally means uncovering or revealing.

The Long Count has 360 days in a year called “Tun”. A “Tun” has 18 months or “unials” and each “unial” has 20 days. Twenty (20) Tuns is a Katun and 20 Katuns is a Baktun (144,000 days or about 400 solar years). Thirteen (13) Baktuns is a “Great Cycle” of 1,872,000 days (5,200 Tuns or about 5,125 solar years). The Great Cycle in the proleptic Gregorian calendar started on 3114 BC August 11 (day 0.0.0.0.0) and ends on 2012 December 21 (day 13.0.0.0.0) – winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Great Cycle restarts the next day (day 0.0.0.0.0). The representation of the Great Cycle of the Mayan Long Count calendar is as follows: (13 Baktuns.20 Katuns.20 Tuns.18 Uinals.20 days).

A thousand years of peace
In the book of Revelation, it tells us about a period of a thousand years of peace. Has this occurred already since the time of Jesus? Not yet. That will still come. Those that give predictions of the world’s end, such as 2012 and numerous times during the past, are pseudo-preachers. Have they talked to God directly? If so, give proofs.

Inevitable physical death
But there is something that will certainly happen—and that is our physical death. This is what we should prepare for. It may come when least expected. We do not know the day and the hour. It will come like a thief in the night. So we just have to be prepared all the time. Search for the true God and when we find Him, follow His commandments and remain in Him until our last dying breath.

Survival kit – faith in the true God
This is all that we have to do. It is faith in the true God that we can take with us when we depart from this world. If we denied Him, He will deny us also before the Father in Heaven and send us to Hell. This is very scary – to live in Hell forever. If we knew Him and loved Him and followed His commandments, then He may reward us to live with Him eternally in His kingdom in Heaven. This is the survival kit that we should have.

2012 is 20 + 12 = 32, age of Jesus when crucified
Did you know that in his/her boredom, “Thanks for reading this” theorized in Yahoo Answers, Religion & Spirituality section, that 2012 could be 20 + 12 = 32, the approximate age of Jesus when He was crucified and died? I answered that he/she is correct in his/her theory. When Jesus died, He was actually 32 solar years old, equivalent to 33 lunar years. This is found in the results of a study that I did to check if what the Holy Spirit said regarding the crucifixion of Jesus on August 17 is correct or not. Details are in http://www.geocities.com/peacecrusader888/crucifyidx.htm. Is this a sign that God is warning us of the impending calamity around 2012, like the end of the Mayan’s calendar cycle? But I repeat, 2012 is not the end of the world yet.

The 144,000 marked good people
The Holy Spirit also told us that beings from another planet will take only the marked good people out of this world. I asked Him if it’s a million. He said much less than that. Then I asked if the number is the one mentioned in Revelation and He affirmed it. A few weeks ago this year, 2008, as I was reading Revelation, I came across Revelation 14:3 to wit (King James Version): “And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.” “Redeemed from the earth” means saved from the earth. And there were 144,000 of them. This must be what the Holy Spirit was referring to several years ago.

Advice of the Holy Spirit
His advice to all: leave their wicked way of life and change their way of thinking. We should come back to the true God before it’s too late. (I read in Isaiah 55:7 this message, to wit (KJV): “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”) Be good then so that we may be considered to be among the 144,000 who will be saved, and later will restart and repopulate this world. The Holy Spirit told us to tell people about this prophecy even though they accuse us as being out of our minds. He assured us that this will happen, similar to Noah’s prophecy of the Great Flood which took a hundred years before it was fulfilled. The ark was the vessel used to save Noah and his family and the animals. This time, another kind of vessel will be used to save the elect.

World War III to start at Spratly Islands
What is also certain to happen very soon (in about 2012 or earlier) is World War III and this is a nuclear war. This “calamitous war” (as Nostradamus called it) will start from the Philippines, at Spratly Islands in particular. The Spratly Islands lie on the southeast part of the South China Sea mostly near the coast of the Philippines. The Holy Spirit told us that the Philippines is the wick of a gas lamp. Once the wick is lit, it will be on and aglow. He told us about this prophecy about two decades ago. He said that the troubles in the Philippines will spread to the whole world until mankind is almost annihilated and a few will remain. Spratly Islands are being claimed wholly by China, Taiwan and Vietnam; and partly by Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. The area is considered a tinderbox, a flash point. It is very rich in oil and gas resources, estimated to be more than the reserve of Kuwait. The high price of oil may trigger the grabbing of these islands and start the war.

Certainty of WW III
Four independent prophecies point to the certainty that this will happen. These are Nostradamus’ prophecies to happen around this time (quatrains 6:24 and 2:62) , the 56th Chinese prophecy of Tui Bei Tu (the past 55 prophecies have already been fulfilled) found at http://www.alexchiu.com/philosophy/superichingtuaybaytu.htm and Wikipedia, Revelation 9:18 of the Holy Bible, and those that the Holy Spirit revealed to us. Spiritual awakening after the war
After the calamitous war, we will have a new age, a spiritual awakening or enlightenment, and peace will reign for a long time. The population would have been reduced by a third and there will be much arable land that will be available. People will be living in planned cities and communities. Would you like to live in a city where the land is free and you are guaranteed possession of the land for 50 years, renewable, and which you can bequeath to an heir?

Come back to the true God now
The Holy Spirit has given His prophecies and these are what will happen. Be rest assured then that the world will not end yet. But please, heed what He advises us to do—to change our wicked way of life and change our wrong beliefs. Come back to the true God now before it’s too late. There a lot of lessons to study.

The decision to believe rests upon you
I am just sharing with you what I heard and learned from the Holy Spirit. The decision to believe Him or not depends upon yourself. I am not forcing anyone to believe in what I share. It is not my responsibility to save you or anyone, but the person’s.

Reassurance of the true God that He will save us
Isaiah 35:4 (KJV) states: “Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you.”

Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. A global cataclysm brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.
