Neil Degrasse Tyson debunks 2012 at the 2010 World Science Festival

Here Neil Degrasse Tyson talks of the Mayan 2012 planetary predictions. He talks about how the alignment of the Sun Earth and center of the galaxy is NOT a unique phenomenon. In fact, this alignment happens each and every year. So why is 2012 any different? He also explains many other non-scientific Mayan perceptions of cosmology. Including the observation that the Mayans thought the Earth was flat, had four corners, and was held up in space on the back of a crocodile and five trees of various bright colors. Which is in and of itself intriguing and culturally important but factually NOT TRUE.

Surviving 2012 – It’s Part Mental Too!

Most articles that are written talk about physically surviving 2012. This article is going to focus on mentally surviving 2012 or better yet mentally preparing to survive 2012 and the events that may or may not happen.

When you think about 2012, does your mind wander to the destruction of the earth due to the ending of the “Mayan Long Count Calendar”? If it does, do you get stressed about and try to think how you are going to prepare to survive 2012 and the events that are predicted to happen? These are very real emotions and reactions to thinking about the end of the world as we know it. However, surviving 2012 need not take up an inordinate amount of your time and energy.

One of the first things that you need to recognize – “Knowledge Is Power!” Try and find out as much as you can about the theory and truth about the predictions and hype surrounding the events that could happen on or about December 21, 2012. Although there is more information than you can possibly find and read on the Internet, not all of it is helpful. Let’s face it – like with most anything else, there are a lot of quacks out there. When you do read, just try and use your common sense as a filter. Also, try and find articles and web sites that believe that there will be a catastrophic event in 2012 and also get information that believes that nothing will happen besides 12/21/12 being another normal day in our lives. Doing that, you have a balance of information so that you can form your own opinions.

As we get closer to the “magic” 2012, there is going to be much, much more attention focused on the Mayan’s theory and prediction that the world will end in 2012 (just remember all of the Y2K craziness). Knowing the facts will help you to not get as caught up in the hype. As far as the media goes, they are not going to be looking for feel good stories, but ones that will try and whip you up into a frenzy so you will keep watching them and turn to them for all of your information about the possibility of a cataclysmic event that is going to happen.

Do not make “knee jerk” reactions or poorly thought out moves in dealing with the issues. This is another place that your screening of information sources will come in handy. If you did not do any research and one day heard about someone on a website somewhere saying to move to his retreat in the mountains to survive 2012 you would be more inclined to go there.

This is not to say that doing common sense things to survive 2012 is wrong. It would be wrong to stick you head in the sand and think that nothing could possibly happen. It is not out of the question or “crazy” to stock up on food, water, first aid supplies and possibly weapons in preparation to survive any events that might come up. But do not do it obsessively. Your basement does not need to look like an army bunker, just use common sense.

Try and find some like-minded people to talk to about this. Believe me, there are plenty of people out there that have heard about the prediction and would be good to bounce ideas off of. You can help each other and there is a lot of comfort in numbers. There are many forums on the Internet where the details of 2012 are discussed. To find a list, simply go to http://www.google.com and type in forum:2012 or forum:surviving 2012 and you will see that there are a ton of places where people are talking about 2012 and all of the topics that surround it. Again, remember your filter and look for rational and factual information.

It is true that there could be something major that will happen in 2012, but there is just the same probability that nothing will happen. So don’t let the thought of surviving 2012 take over your life. The best things that you can do to prepare to mentally survive is to be calm, be prepared and be informed. And remember that Knowledge is always power!

Jeff McKinstry has developed a keen interest in the phenomenon known as the “Mayan End of the World Theory or Prediction”. He has started the website http://www.2012thewaiting.com waiting that covers news, opinion and tips for preparation for the possible fruition of the Mayan prophecy. Please visit and learn more and contribute.

I am always looking for guest writers. If you would like to submit an article, please send it to admin@2012thewaiting.com.
